Chestertown Ten Miler

Not sure why, but I've never done this race before. It was a nice discovery, realizing that it was a quick drive there on lovely country roads to the town. I drove up with Training Buddy Dave and parked at the local school, and picked up the shuttle for this lovely waterfront park. I heard there were about 800 runners in 2 races.

There was light rain at the start which dissipated about halfway through the run. The race itself was along small rural roads through the countryside - after the simultaneous 5k split off at their turnaround it was a lovely quiet run.

Clock crossing the finish line said about 2:02:30
Watch time 2:01:15
Official time 2:00:38

I enjoyed it enough that I signed up for an upcoming sprint triathlon and half marathon starting from the same park.

In other race planning news, I've started keeping a list of my upcoming races in my Facebook sidebar. A nice little feature to have there as a reminder of what I'm training for!

2010 Oxford Day 10k

Last year on a hot day: 1:05:15. This year at a similar effort on a lovely cool day: 1:08:23. 11:01 min/mile pace. I'm entering my final tragic decline, I fear. ;-)

12/16 in age group females 50-59 (75%)
122/154 overall (79%)

It's time to get back to some heavier-duty training. I note that last year's smaller number of races did not help my speed any!

Time to finally figure out my race calendar for the year! OK, I've got my sidebar caught up with completed races, at least. Here we go again!

2010 Cherry Pit 10-miler

387 runners this year on a counter-clockwise course. I finished in the back:

373 Nancy Toby 52 23/24 F 2:01:08 12:07

On a clockwise course in 2007 I ran this race in 1:48:52. Getting 13 minutes slower over 10 miles is not the correct direction to be moving!

Beach 2 Battleship half iron triathlon: times

I finished! There were some issues with the timing mats so the official splits were messed up, so I spent some time with my watch times to get estimates:

SWIM 1.2 miles (PR! that doesn't really count*)
Watch time at water exit: 32:56* (1:33/100 yards)
Chip swim time (after showering and ~100 yard run): 34:25* (136/163)
*incredibly current-assisted

T1
Watch t1: 10:11 (swim exit to bike exit)
Calc t1: 8:42 (estimated from timing mat to timing mat)

BIKE 56 miles
Chip bike + t1: 3:36:24 (122/160)
Calc bike: 3:28:42
Odometer average speed: 16.1 mph
Calc average speed: 16.1 mph

T2: Chip time 4:54 (114/157)

RUN 13.1 miles
Run: Chip time 3:17:54 (148/156)

TOTAL
Finish: 7:33:36
13/16 women 50-54 who finished swim, 13/15 finishers
142/163 women who finished swim

Aside: I think this was my 40th half marathon race run, but my count is a little fuzzy.

Saint Michaels Sports Boosters 5k

Teensy tiny local race that goes past my house. No mile markers, forgot my Garmin, no one to pace off of. Coughing and side stitch after being ill for 3 weeks.

BUT this "plodder" didn't walk!! That's a victory for today!

30:14 at the line.

I have the winter to take off 2:15 to get a new PR.

1:09 slower than this course last year, but it was warmer and more humid today. Hmm, but then again I was bouncing back from being sick then too! Oh well, this seems to be a habit. I still won my AG (50 to death; out of maybe 3 women in the AG who didn't walk it) and got a $20 gift certificate to the local Christmas Store!

Then I had to go rescue my training buddy Dave who got a flat on his bike and didn't have the stuff to fix it after flatting a spare tube.... and I also smashed my ankle in the garage entry door, bleeding on my socks. Silliness.

2008 PRs: Year in review

I thought this topic deserved its own post!

I just finished my last race of the year.

I end up 2008 with PRs at the mile (8:44), 5k (28:00), and 15k (1:40:22) distances.

My new events for 2008 (not counted for PRs until I beat my initial performance): 5k, 10k, and 40k cycling individual time trials; 40 km cycling road race; and Muddy Buddy; as well as finishing the Annapolis Striders Championship Series of running races (7th/9 qualifiers out of 23 AG participants).

In triathlon, I didn't hit any overall PRs, but I had my fastest Olympic-distance swim leg (1500m in 33:18), fastest half-Ironman bike leg (56 miles in 3:23:22), and fastest Olympic-distance run leg (10k in 1:09:34).

(I'm not counting Steelhead duathlon which should have been a half Ironman).

Still haven't cracked that sub-hour 10k time that I've been wanting to, but I only ran one standalone 10k this year, shortly after coming back from pneumonia. Oh well. I'm not sure I'll run any standalone 10ks in 2009, so that goal will just have to wait a while.

Hooray for running faster and for trying new things!

Down's Park 5-Miler

Had a lovely race today (even though I ran very hard) around a lovely park next to the Chesapeake, with good friends! Jeanne was my rabbit and led me the whole way except when she sprinted past me several times after walk breaks at about a 6 min/mile pace.

Results are already posted!
48:39.67 = 9:43 min/mile pace
192/243 overall = 79%
Better than my average finish!
I think it's a PR (I haven't done many 5-mile races), though that pace still wouldn't buy me a sub-1:00 10k.

As far as I can remember, the last 5-miler I did was a turkey trot in 2004 when I ran 54:10 - so in 4 years I've lost well over a minute per mile.

One of the best parts was that they had their technical singlets and cycling vests on sale for $5 each. I bought 1 singlet and 3 vests!

Will post some Halloween photos tomorrow. . . . tired now. . . . zzzzZZZZZzzzzZZZZzzz

Back from Philly!

Great Olympic course in central Philadelphia! Very fun bike course with lots of climbs and turns and fun downhills. Except I flatted about 10 miles into the bike which cost me about 15 minutes and a PR. Oh well, so it goes! All of a sudden there are 34 women in my age group! Good grief, there were only 16 in my AG at this event last year!

I'm happy that I mentally stayed in the race and didn't just phone it in after the flat. I worked hard and improved my transitions (gotta go back and check my records on that - about a minute of that swim time is really T1) and the 10K was just 4 1/2 minutes over my standalone 10K last weekend - I worked for that sub-1:10 run, it was starting to get hot!

Back from Columbia

Back from Columbia! And I finished, for my 4th trip around this course!! And (despite my horrible negative expectations after being sick for ~6 weeks) I had a great deal of fun, too!

I heard Chris Lieto won and set a course record (which means Macca did not win) but that's just rumor. Weather was perfect for the earlier waves - started to sprinkle a bit when I started the run, though.

One really nice thing they did (I love all the races they manage) was print people's results after the finish line on small cards, so we had instant timing results. I'm sure I finished way at the bottom of my age group, but I'm happy with that after starting the day not really expecting to finish.
  • Swim: 33:18 (Olympic PR)
  • T1: 6:54 (took a nap and squandered every bit of the extra time I gained in the swim - even though I did have a crummy rack spot with nearly the longest bike run-out on wet slippery grass).
  • Bike: 1:46:11 (my 2nd fastest on this brutal course - watched my HR to keep it from spiking and spun slowly up all the hills seated)
  • T2: 3:06 (another siesta)
  • Run: 1:15:55 (my 2nd fastest on this course - even watching my HR and walking every time it hit 175 except the last 2 miles, but started coughing quite a bit)
  • Finish: 3:45:23 (2nd fastest on this course by about one minute)

More details may follow in a long report, some day....

Done with Marine Corps Marathon!

Unfortunately I managed to lose my pacer Dave at mile 5 today!! But he did fine without me and nearly equalled his time from last year (when he didn't lose time in the first five miles helping this slower runner). I got nearly a half-hour marathon PR so I'm pleased, even though it wasn't the sub-5 I had wished for, and I ran a 23+ minute positive split. Maybe next time!! But I did beat him on age-grade. :-)

So I hit #4 and #5 of my 6 goals (about a 29-minute marathon PR and about 54 minutes faster than my previous MCM). Not sure I was exactly smiling at the finish, I was beat! But I did finish upright.

Details to follow in a day or two, after sleep and of course, downloading my Garmin data! Thanks for checking in on me!

Columbia is in the books!

Preliminary results have been posted.

I had a great swim, not a great bike, sluggish transitions, and bonked on the run. I finished, though! Saw lots of wonderful folks and had fun. Now tired.

Ocean City results up!

I believe that we have 3 PRs out of 3 runners!
http://www.runwashington.com/results/searchable.html

My chip time was a 5-second PR!!! Yay!! 2:26:33. 11:11 min/mile pace, 186/223 women (83%), 13/16 women 45-49 (81%).

5 seconds faster than the B&A Trail Half Marathon at which they paced me just 5 weeks ago, when it felt like I was dying for the last 3 miles trying to get to that finish line. This race was much more comfortable - I guess this training stuff really works, eh?

So PRs all around for my training buddies Dave (1:45:07) and Chuck (1:54:54), and ME!! I guess we do some of our best running on the thin edge of hypothermia.

Now the challenge is on for me and David in 2 weeks, to see how much either of us can beat our PR on the flattest course around. Let's just hope the wind is from the southwest. And no snow, please. Chuck is going off to do some silly triathlon thing or 'nother....

This is what the race result calculator predicts for me now:
5K 0:31:33
5M 0:52:05
10K 1:06:05
10M 1:49:06
Half Marathon 2:26:33
Marathon 5:06:56

Hmm. I've beaten that 10 mile and 10K time. Haven't done any 5K nor 5 mile races in a while, but I'm pretty sure that I could beat those times now. I'm always slower than the prediction the longer the distance. But the main thing is that it shows I definitely have some work yet to do before I can run a sub-5-hour marathon. I need to get that half marathon time down below 2:23 or thereabouts to have a real hope of a sub-5 marathon finish. Below 2:20 would be better. OK, the challenge is on for this summer's training!

National Half Marathon followup

THREE days now, one email to the Race Director and two emails to the scoring folks, and they still haven't managed to post the correct results online for the race.

Here is the email exchange from yesterday after sending the scoring correction to the scoring folks (after the Race Director bounced it back to me):

fixed

It's NOT fixed in the online results yet!!
http://www.nationalmarathon.com/Results/2007.asp
Even though the half marathon course was TOO LONG by about 0.4 miles, I still would kind of like to know my official time within over 2 days of the race....
Thanks!!

fixed on my computer only. I have not set the new results to the web site yet

Sheesh!! Am I just expecting too much? Is knowing your time three days after the race expecting immediate gratification? Is politeness too much to ask for a $65 entry fee?

Like perhaps: "We're sorry for the error. Thank you for providing us with the correct timing information. The corrected results have now been posted. Your correct gun time is x:xx:xx, and your chip time is x:xx:xx. Thank you for running with us this year."

Their principal sponsor is a wireless telephone company. Somehow I thought that would prompt them to have better communication of timing results.

Just can't get good help these days. . . .

Update: 9AM: I'm now listed as:
1088 65/73 4996 Nancy Toby 49 St Michaels MD 2:30:54 11:31 2:32:33 11:39

Which assigns me a chip time that is still 45 seconds longer than my watch time. And I'm still listed as 2nd place in my age group. But believe me, I'm not nearly as frustrated as I would be if I had actually earned 2nd place in my age group and not been awarded it!!!
It's still not clear exactly what the actual race distance was, but 4 different Garmins recorded it as between 13.48 and 13.54 miles.

Update 2: I just got another email from the timing folks: "You were caught by the backup system at the finish. There was no backup at the start so you net time = gun time". Hmm. I recall at the finish area there were two widely-separated mats, and I stopped and began walking after crossing the first mat, since there were people walking around in my way near the 2nd mat. I guess the lesson here is always run hard through the 2nd mat if your time matters to you.

So much for their low-cost proprietary ankle-strap timing chips, eh? I do understand that sometimes chips don't register. But I still don't think that accounts for 45 full seconds difference. And there still is 1:39 between my chip time and gun time, which must have been the time before going over the initial starting mat. Something's still messed up in their numbers. This all seems a little amateurish for a "National Half Marathon".

I think every participant in the race deserves accurate timing results for a $65 entry fee, not just the front-runners - don't you?

Saturday, March 24, 2007

And I got 2nd!!

And here are the official results!!

FEMALE AGE GROUP: 45 - 49
1 3128 Debi Bernardes** 48 King George VA 1:35:13
2 4996 Nancy Toby 49 St Michaels MD 1:39:16
3 5269 Debbie Daughtry 49 Ellicott City MD 1:44:44

That darned Coach Debi, she beats me every time!!!

Uh, no, that's about 50 minutes before I actually finished. I think I was something like 65th out of 72 in my age group. I emailed them and confessed. Too honest for my own good.
