It's different for the pros

Amanda Lovato doesn't like it when she hears pros say that they're going to "participate" in a race instead of saying they're racing it.

As for me, I participate in races. Even while going as fast as I'm able. I don't entertain any delusions of head-to-head competition with anyone.

Except if I see woman with a calf number in my age group ahead of me. Then it's game on. Unless I'm mid-bonk, that is.

I race one person and one person only -- myself. Mostly. But there are times (like coming up in Austin) that I use a race just to see where I am physically.

I also participate and only race when I think I can move up a notch which usually means from almost last to closer to the middle.

I guess that's why we are not Pros :-)

Heh, yeah, it kills me when the people think I'm only slow because I'm not trying. I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING!!!

We use the word 'bonk' differently over here - let's say it's a euphemism for, ahem, conjugal felicity. I can quite honestly say I have NEVER tried to pass anyone mid-bonk!

I'm on your side, Nancy! I participate! Like Skatemom, I just race against myself.
However, I looked at Amanda's blog and found out there's a 1/2 marathon here in Austin this weekend. Hmmm.... but even if it's not sold out it's probably $$$$ like everything else here Deep In The Heart of Excess.
