The Nation's Triathlon is on!

They did it! They managed to get approvals to run an Olympic-distance triathlon in the monumental core of Washington, DC on September 16, 2006. Congratulations to the organizers on what must have been an enormous task juggling numerous agencies and government entities.

Registration is open here. It will set you back about $183 to get in. I think I'm going to wait-and-see this year, and perhaps give it a go next year if it survives. If they get rainfall anywhere in the Potomac watershed within a day or two preceding the race, I think they probably will have to cancel the swim due to water quality issues. But let's hope it goes!

Wow isn't that a lot of money for a first year race..and that distance too? Hope it works well though!!

No kidding! I can do like 3 local sprint tris for that money. I was TRYING to be nice, Shelley!! :-)

They had better have some nice goodies at that race for the price you have to pay.

I was really hoping to do it until I got the email with the price! Though the price is probably justified (really expensive to close off all those roads and get all the permits) I'm not sure how many racers will be willing to pay that amount for a sprint tri.

Apparently EVERYTHING costs more in Washington, DC.

Wow. They couldn't even get the permit for the St. Pat's Day 10k...and they are staging a TRI?

Wonder how it'll fare?

What a neat but weird course. I went kayaking through Washington Harbor last week, and wow, that water was shallow (not to mention really shady!)!

A neat idea though! Maybe this event will last (like the redemption of the National Marathon this past spring).

Ouch! That's pretty a pretty hefty price for the distance. I know the government has a budget shortfall but do they have to try and get it back all in just one race?

;-)

Seriously tho, I hope the race is a success. It sounds like it would be a blast to race around the monuments.

Stay tuned...
