New sport

I'm starting in my first official cycling individual time trial tomorrow morning. 40 km (24.85 miles).

I'm nervous!

Any last-minute advice for me??

I know I need to wear a jersey with sleeves.

Anything else I'm forgetting? I'm worried I'm going to unknowingly violate some arcane rule. Plus it will be my first standing start.

This is the same course on which I'll be riding the Maryland State Senior Individual Time Trials later this summer, to hopefully qualify for the 2009 National Senior Games, so this is really just my first practice ride to preview the course.

I'll get a good warmup and cooldown, since the start is 5 miles from the parking area. My only other plan is to go hard to the turnaround, then go harder.

Goals? I'd just like to get the experience, not screw up too much, not crash, and maybe if I'm lucky break 18 mph.

Have fun out there!

I agree with Wendy, although I find fun to be a bit of a relative term when equated with bike time trials.

If you finish with a sore throat from sucking air, legs that are wobbly, and some drool and snot dripping down your chin, you have found the fun in bike time trials.

So if I barf, that will just be the icing on the cake, so to speak?

I just liked stopping after the bike so much last weekend I thought I'd do it again!!

Thanks!

Have a great TT! The only weird part is when the guy seems to grab your butt when in fact he is holding on to your seat to keep you balanced for the start....

It'll be nice to be able to go all out on the bike and not have to worry about going for a run after. Just keep pushing till they tell you to stop!

I'm no expert having now done only 3 short TTs but have learned that it helps to start in the right gear (not the gear I end my warm-up in!) and to position my feet so that my strongest (right) leg is forward and that foot is at about 2 o'clock.

Good luck!!!
