For two reasons, even though it's a staged shot after-the-fact: Keith Ellison (D-MN, right) got sworn into office on the Koran pictured, formerly owned by Thomas Jefferson. On the left, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), grandma and
new Speaker of the House of Representatives and first woman in that position, was also sworn in today.

just read your last post - what a prat!
This photo says a lot of hopeful things about the future, doesn't it?
On one level, I agree it's a good photo. A woman became Speaker of the House, breaking another "glass ceiling" in need of breaking. And despite the minor hullaballoo, America showed it's character by living up to the freedom of religion claim and acknowledged that swearing on the Koran is equal to the Bible. (Those few who said it shouldn't be allowed are crackpots).
On another level, I see it as frightening. But that's simply a matter of politics, and it's frightening in a "what did we do" sense. The other half of the nation is really glad it was her and not Boehner.
