Steelhead sickness?

"The concentration of PCBs and total DDT and its metabolites in fish and wildlife tissues showed almost no decline between 1990 and 2000," [a recent] report states. "The concentration of PCBs in Great Lakes fish today is 40 times above EPA's acceptable level."

Ewww. And I'm planning to maybe SWIM in that next August?

So THAT is what happened to Shelley and Vertical Man. ;-)

  1. you will glow in the dark!

Unfortunately they haven't had the clean up campaign like PA, MD & VA did for the Chesapeake.

  2. Actually, I think it's fine to swim in as long as bacterial counts are okay and you don't happen to swallow any fish or drink the contents of your wetsuit. :-)

  3. These warnings inlude alot of the fish you eat at restraunts and buy in grocery strores (ie salmon). Mercury accumulation is a serious issue especially for women, children and particularly pregnant women. Scary hah! Bottom line, eat fish, but not too much. This is the world we live in.

  5. Yeah, PCB's are the reason for the Link to the Carolina Lake Projects on my site. One of our biggest triathlons is run every year in a lake with increasing PCB's even though the offending company has long since changed its practices. Water qaulity is always my top priority in choosing a race. I wonder how the gulf of mexico will be after the runoff from Katrina's damage?
